Aria

I slept fitfully, nestled in Drace’s arms. My dreams haunted me with memories of clawing at the door, my nails shredding. Screaming for my mother to set me free. Collapsing on the floor, crying, until there was nothing left of me but a pleading mess.

Throughout the night, Drace held me. He soothed me, calling me his mate, his fate, his salvation.

Didn’t he know? It was the other way around; he was mine.

Murky light blooming above as the spitzers woke for the morning woke me.

I stretched and snuggled closer to Drace. I’ve only known him a short time, but he’d woven himself deeply into my soul with his kindness and patience. Was it any wonder I was falling for him already?

And now it might be too late. My throat choked off, but I swallowed my fear, refusing to let it consume me.

He rubbed my back and kissed the top of my head.

“Let’s distract each other,” I said. “Tell me something. Anything.”

“Would you like to hear something few others know?”

The piqued my interest.

I watched his face as he spoke. “I am a rigit of the streets.”

“I’m not sure what that means.”

“My mother died when I was eight-yaros-old. We lived near the market, and after the landlord told me to leave, I did. Before she died, my mother begged me to be a good youngling, and I did my best to fulfil her request.”

“Oh, Drace.” I was five-one; he had to be seven-two or three. My arms wouldn’t fit around him, but I tried, holding him while picturing the small boy trying to make his way in the world alone.

He started down at me, his expression slack. When I sniffed, my eyes stinging in sympathy, he carefully wiped my tears away with his fingers. “Now I have made you sad, when I should be distracting you, making you laugh.”

“I want to know. What about your father?”

“I never knew him. Only his name, Dhennu. My mother said he left her when I was a driegling. She was Remeron and he was Zoad. This was before the truce, when the two Clans feuded. No wonder he left; he was not welcome here in the kingdom.” He flashed his teeth. “My fangs come from my father.”

“How did you survive? Did someone take you in?”

“I met another youngling, and we became friends. We joined a pack of others who enjoyed sneaking away from their families and wreaked havoc on the city until we were caught. I, of course faced punishment, but my friends did not.”

“Why not?”

“They had family to speak for them, and my best friend was a prince.”

“You’re talking about you, Malac, Teran, Kruze, and Rashe, right?”

He nodded. “The five of us were hauled before the king and I expected to spend the rest of my life in the dungeon for endangering the heir to the throne.”

“What happened next?” I waited raptly for him to continue. My fear of this drippy place and what would come next lurked in the back of my mind, but heartache for Drace shoved all other feelings aside.
